ABACO has been awarded a H2020 project called “Big Data Grapes” for the research of grapes’ characteristics and benefits for the cosmetic industry and viticulture.
In this context, the solution SITI4farmer (www.siti4farmer.co.uk), recognised by the likes of Innovate UK as ground-breaking, is leading the integration between IoT sensors in the vineyards participating the project and the innovative IT platform. Weather stations have been installed in Tuscany – Montalcino area – and they are already sending their data to the IT system every 15 minutes. More sensors recording leaf wetness and grapes temperatures will be placed in the upcoming season for the benefit of viticulturists.
This monitoring will allow an intelligent management of the vineyard, detecting diseases and empowering an effective decision-making with also an outlook on the use of the grapes products on the cosmetics sectors.
The data from the stations will be integrated with many other sources such as satellite images and drones. Earth Observation can give important insights on water stress level and chlorophyll content. A list of the possible indices can be found on the SITI4farmer website.
Companies such as Vodafone and Digital Globe are also relying on the ABACO platform for smart vineyards, for the development of for the Sensing4farming product launched in October with Bodegas Emilio Moro in Spain.
